FIRST
PRINTING PRESS
In 1593, the first
printing press was worked by hand
and turned out to help convert the
Filipinos to Catholicism. Some two
centuries later, improved machinery
- but still run by hand - printed
the first newspaper , Del Superior
Govierno, in August 8, 1811, giving
news about the Napoleonic invasion
of Spain.
The Filipinoémigrés
in Spain published in 1889 the fortnightly
periodical La Solidaridad to propagate
their nationalistic views. In 1910
the Manila weekly journal El Renacimiento
was closed after a libel suit against
its publisher, Martin Ocampo, and
the editor Teodoro M. Kalaw.
The hand press was used
to
print Del Superior Govierno in the early
19th century.
