AIJC attends experts’ meeting

AIJC participated in an Experts’ Meeting on Knowledge Sharing through Online Services in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) on September 3 in Pasig City.

Convened by the Colombo Plan Staff College for Technician Education (CPSC) at its headquarters, the meeting brought together experts from the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines, UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre, University of the Philippines-Open University, Toyota Motor Foundation, Asian Institute of Management, Gokongwei Brothers Foundation, Dual Tech Training Center, Smart Communication, and  AIJC. They discussed ways to improve TVET delivery through ICT and came up with recommendations for CPSC and its partners.

AIJC also attended the inauguration of a wireless blended learning center at the CPSC later that day. The Korean Ambassador to the Philippines, His Excellency Joong-Kyung Choi, led the inauguration ceremony.

The new Center has top-of-the-line web-based technologies that can deliver learning programs in TVET to its 28 member-nations. It was established to strengthen its capability in wireless technology for education and training.

CPSC is a Philippine-based inter-governmental organization for human resources development in TVET. According to Prof. Shyamal Majumdar, CPSC Director General, the  current developmental initiatives include acquiring wireless technologies and video-conferencing facilities, offering courses in information and communication technology, and using web-based teaching and learning systems in training courses.

Biodiversity Photo Contest

Over 600 unpublished photo entries have been submitted by professional, amateur and student photographers and photo hobbyists from the ASEAN member-nations to the first ASEAN-wide Photo Contest on Biodiversity with the theme, "Zooming in on Biodiversity."

The photo contest, organized by the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB), promotes biodiversity all over the ASEAN region to show the need to address escalating problems on biological diversity and to create awareness and support for its sustainability.

Biodiversity, the source of the air we breathe and the food we eat, among others, is threatened with man’s wasteful and inefficient consumption patterns due to modern development.

The ACB together with the ASEAN member-states, European Commission, and Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication will award a total of US$7,700 cash prizes to the winners. Major sponsors of the contest are UNESCO, MTV Philippines, Philippine Press Institute, and United Print Media Group.

First placers in the three categories will have an opportunity to exhibit their winning photos and attend the ASEAN Conference on Biodiversity in Singapore in October 2009 for free.
The  ASEAN member-states are Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

Photojournalism students visit BusinessMirror

Editor-in-chief Lourdes Fernandez briefed five students on photojournalism ethics and standards as practiced by BusinessMirror during their visit on July 5.

Fernandez also explained the newspaper’s process of selecting photographs for publication, the role of editors in selecting photographs, photojournalist-reporter-chief photo editor interaction in covering an event, and other relevant topics.

Chief of photographers Romeo Florante and senior photographer Nonie Reyes shared their experiences and perspectives on photojournalism.

Science editor Lyn Resurreccion welcomed the students—Eric Aseo, Conrad Bidaswa, Carlo Renan Edilla, Maria Angela Pestano, and Milagros Valdez—upon their arrival at BusinessMirror in Makati City. Prof. Johnny Goloyugo led the group.

“It is our pleasure to help students. Anytime you need us, you are always welcome,” Resurreccion said.

The visit is part of the practical training and learning experience for photojournalism students, Prof. Goloyugo said.

“The visit exposed us to an outside-the-classroom learning setting—a real and practical way of learning photojournalism,” Bidaswa said after the visit.
