ON
COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION
UNESCO's action in the areas of communication
and information will be in line with the objectives
set out in the resolution of the United Nations
Economic and Social Council on the role of information
technology in the context of a knowledge-based
global economy and the United Nations Millenium
Declaration (September 2000).
These call for the creation of an international
strategic partnership to bridge the digital divide
and establish a knowledge society that is open
and non-exclusive.
For UNESCO, the main objective is to build a knowledge
society based on the sharing of knowledge and
incorporating all the socio-cultural and ethical
dimensions of sustainable development.
The World Summit on the Information Society scheduled
for 2003 under the auspices of the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU) will allow participants
to take stock of all the issues at stake, to draw
up a balance sheet of achievements and to define
strategies for future action.
It is UNESCO's mission to promote the free flow
of information, knowledge and data, to encourage
the creation of diversified contents and to facilitate
equitable access to information and to the means
of sharing knowledge while at the same time giving
, attention to institutional capacity building.
